About Philip Shaw

Philip Shaw's illustrious winemaking career spans nearly six decades, marked by innovation, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1947, Philip's passion for winemaking ignited at the young age of 12 after a school excursion to Roseworthy Agricultural College. By 14, he was gaining hands-on experience in wineries such as Penfolds and Wynns Magill. After graduating from University of Adelaide Roseworthy Campus in 1969, Philip joined Lindeman's, Australia's largest wine company at the time, where he quickly rose to the position of Head of Production at their Corowa winery. At just 23, he oversaw the construction of Lindeman's Karadoc winery in Mildura, designed to be the largest in Australia with a planned capacity of 200,000 tonnes. In 1982, Philip became the chief winemaker at Rosemount Estate, playing a pivotal role in the company's global success, with production growing from approximately 20,000 cases to six million cases during his tenure.

Philip's contributions to the wine industry have been recognized with numerous accolades, including being named International Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in both 1986 and 2000, and Australian Winemaker of the Year by Qantas Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine in 1999.

HOOSEGG Vineyards

In 2015, Philip established HOOSEGG, a venture that embodies his lifelong dream of producing wines of unparalleled quality. Utilizing select parcels from his Koomooloo Vineyard in Orange, NSW, HOOSEGG represents the culmination of Philip's extensive experience and his commitment to crafting wines that stand among the finest in the world.

The name "HOOSEGG" holds special significance: "HOO" refers to Philip himself, symbolizing a new chapter distinct from his previous ventures, while "EGG" signifies a new beginning. This project allows Philip to pursue winemaking without the usual commercial constraints, focusing solely on quality and innovation.

The Wines

Guests at the Winemakers Dinner will have the exclusive opportunity to taste ten of Philip's exceptional wines from the HOOSEGG range, including rare vintage selections personally chosen by Philip. These wines are renowned for their elegance, complexity, and reflection of the unique cool climate terroir of the Orange region.

Just one of the highlights of the evening will be the 2017 "Double Happy" Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that has been described as the culmination of Philip's outstanding career in wine.
