Tasting Notes
Rich dense purple in colour. The aromas are very complex and intense with violets , earth , plum , dark cherry and exotic tea. The palate is pure , long & deep with intense raspberries. There are a few tannins but very persistent.
Winemaker and Winemaking
Emmanuel Escutenaire is the Maître de Chai (Cellar Master) and Winemaker at Château de Meursault. He oversees the vinification, maturation, and bottling processes. The grapes are manually sorted and destemmed before optic sorting to select the most beautiful the berries only. They are put into thermoregulated stainless steel vats for 15 to 18 days of cold maceration. Alcoholic fermentation lasts 5 to 6 days. The fermentation may be punctuated by push down and pumping over to obtain a soft and complete extraction. Ageing is for 18 months in new oak barrels (40%) and in oak barrels of one or two years.
The Vineyards
Château de Meursault origins go back to the 11th century. From 1666 it was owned by Pierre de Blancheton, a lawyer in the Burgundy Parliament, and it remained in his family until the Revolution. It has recently undergone major developments under the direction of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. One of the Côte de Beaune’s most richly endowed estates, the Château de Meursault has no less than 23 hectares of its holdings in Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations. The vineyards cover an extraordinary 65 hectares, from Savigny Lès Beaune through to Meursault. In 2019 the estate was certified as fully organic under Stéphane’s guidance. Located at around 270 meters above the see level, at the top of the hillside, the Clos des Chênes is the perfect terroir. It is on the cooler, higher slopes. The vines are 45 years old and planted in cool marne white clay soils at the top of the slope.
