Tasting Notes

Moscatel is the Iberian term for Muscat of Alexandria. The MR (Molino Real ) Moscatel shows a bright, golden yellow colour. The nose has an intense bouquet of floral and fruity aromas, including orange blossom, honeysuckle, and jasmine, alongside notes of ripe peach, apricot, and a hint of citrus zest. The palate is rich and luscious, with a sweet, full-bodied texture that is balanced by refreshing acidity. It mirrors the nose, with layers of ripe stone fruits, honey, and citrus, complemented by a subtle minerality that adds complexity and depth. The finish is long and lingering, with a beautiful interplay between sweetness and acidity, leaving a pleasant, refreshing sensation on the palate.

Wine Making

The winemaker is Telmo Rodríguez. When Telmo Rodríguez founded his eponymous wine company with partner Pablo Eguzkiza in 1994, they were inspired by the remote and forgotten landscapes of Spain. He aims to produce wines that are authentic and reflect the characteristics of the grape and the land from which they come. The grapes for the 2021 ‘MR’ Moscatel are sourced from vineyards in the Málaga region of southern Spain. Málaga is famous for its sweet wines. These grapes are grown 900 metres up on very steep, schist slopes. They are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, ensuring that they have the necessary sugar levels for producing a sweet wine. After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, and the juice undergoes a slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is stopped early by cooling the wine, preserving the natural sugars in the grapes and resulting in a sweet, luscious wine.

The Vineyard

Molino Real is a Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza project that was started in 1996. The Málaga vineyards are situated on steep slopes with poor, rocky soils, which force the vines to work hard and produce grapes with concentrated flavours. The region’s proximity to the Mediterranean Sea also plays a role in the unique characteristics of the wine, providing a cooling influence that helps maintain acidity in the grapes. Málaga has a warm Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and mild winters. The sunny, dry conditions are ideal for growing Moscatel, which thrives in warm climates and produces grapes with high sugar content, essential for making sweet wines.
