Tasting Notes
The colour of the wine is vibrant ruby-red with garnet hues. The aromas are intense and inviting, with layers of dark cherry, wild raspberry, and blackcurrant. Earthy undertones of forest floor, dried herbs, and hints of mushroom add depth, along with a subtle touch of oak spice and vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture. Flavours of ripe red and black fruits are interwoven with savory notes of clove, anise, and mineral-driven freshness. A beautifully balanced wine with vibrant acidity and excellent aging potential, promising further complexity over the next decade.
Wine Making
The winemaker is Nick Farr, son of the founder, Gary Farr who is recognized as one of Australia’s most skilled winemakers, having honed his craft in Burgundy and other top Pinot Noir-producing regions. Nick Farr brings a complementary modern touch, creating wines that honor tradition while embracing innovation.
The Vineyards
The Farrside Vineyard, from which this wine originates, is a single-vineyard site located on the family’s estate in Bannockburn, Geelong. It is planted on black volcanic soil over limestone, interspersed with ironstone, which contributes to the wine's mineral complexity and structure. The site benefits from a cool maritime climate, with steady breezes and moderate temperatures ensuring even ripening and retention of acidity. Farrside features a mix of Burgundian Pinot Noir clones, chosen for their ability to produce wines of depth and elegance. The vines are dry-grown, encouraging deep root systems and the development of concentrated flavours. Sustainable and biodynamic practices are employed, focusing on soil health and biodiversity.
