Tasting Notes

The colour of the wine is light ruby red with orange reflections. Elegant and harmonious nose. Aromas of fresh cranberries, clove, dried orange, roses, and anise with hints of small red fruits and spices, with refreshing pine, eucalyptus, herbs and iris. The palate is elegant revealing raspberry compote, wild cherry, star anise, and blood orange. The Fontanabianca Barbaresco is powerful, complex, and multi-faceted, with vigorous tannins and a tangy, sometimes rustic sapidity.

Wine Making

The winemaker is Matteo Pola. The wine undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Extended maceration on the skins is employed to extract colour, tannins, and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in oak barrels, followed by additional time in the bottle before release. The winemaking approach emphasizes minimal intervention to highlight the natural characteristics of the grape and its origin.

The Vineyards

The Fontanabianca estate is a small, family-run winery in the commune of Neive, Barbaresco. The estate is known for its vineyard sites, including the Bordini cru and the Serraboella cru.  Barbaresco is known as an age-friendly wine because its high tannins soften over time. DOCG regulations require a minimum of two years of aging to be labelled Barbaresco. Founded in 1969, it is a family-owned estate currently run by the Pola family, with Aldo Pola and his son Matteo at the helm. They are dedicated to producing wines that respect the traditional practices of Barbaresco while incorporating modern winemaking techniques to enhance quality and precision. Their philosophy revolves around expressing the terroir of Barbaresco with clarity and elegance.
