Jean Paul Deville Champagne
Jean Paul Deville Champagne
Jean Paul Deville Champagne is exceptional for several reasons that stem from the winemakers philosophy, the quality of the terroir, and the meticulous attention to detail in the winemaking process. Superb Champagne from grapes grown in grad-cru vineyards.
Tasting Notes
This is a classic grower champagne of stunning quality. The colour is a distinguished bright straw yellow and presents with a persistent mousse and fine bubbles. The nose is fragrant and fruity, with lots of red apple, citrus, lime peel and some red currant. The lees have left sensations of bread crust, almonds, hazelnuts and hints of dried fruit and toast. The palate is lively and clean, dry and pleasantly fruity. The finish is long with well-balanced savory and lively citrus freshness.
Wine Making
Since Jean-Paul's untimely death in 2013 the estate has been run by his daughter Marie-Alice and his 4 sons who continue the family tradition of producing excellent Champagnes from Grand Cru vineyards. Marie-Alice is 5th generation viticulturist. She is also the winemaker and oenologist, a doctoral student, and experienced project manager. She makes this exceptional champagne in the traditional méthode champenoise style using only carefully handpicked grapes. However, the difference is the dominance of 70% Grand Cru Pinot Noir grapes which give it rich mineral content and flavours of exotic fruit. The wine is aged on lees for over 5 years before disgorgement creating a complex and food friendly style of champagne.
The Vineyards
The house of Jean-Paul Deville is situated in the centre of the village of Verzy, just 20km southeast of the Champagne capital, Reims. The vineyard is 17 hectares and all vineyards are classified as Champagne Grand Cru.
The Deville Family had been in control of their vineyards for over five generations. Prior to 1966 the family were viticulturalists selling their grapes to negociants. In 1966, when Jean-Paul Deville was only 23, he decided to create his own unique blend of Champagne with a dominance of the Gand Cru Pinot Noir grape in the blend. This is what sets the Deville champagne apart, different to anything else that was produced in Reims
