Tasting Notes

A deep, rich ruby-red colour with garnet reflections, showcasing the maturity and intensity typical of a well-crafted Brunello. The nose is expressive and complex, offering aromas of ripe red fruits like cherry, strawberry, and plum, followed by layers of more mature notes such as dried herbs, tobacco, and a touch of leather. There are subtle hints of spices, such as cinnamon and cloves, along with earthy undertones of forest floor and a light note of cedarwood from oak aging. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured with a velvety texture with flavours of ripe red fruit and blackberry, complemented by dark chocolate, liquorice, and balsamic notes. There is a noticeable minerality that provides depth and balance, while the wine’s acidity and fine-grained tannins offer excellent structure and promise for further aging. The finish is long and persistent, with a harmonious blend of fruit, spice, and earthy complexity that lingers on the palate, leaving a lasting impression of refined elegance and subtle power.

Wine Making

The winemaker is Giovanni Sordi, who has been integral to the winery’s success and reputation. Giovanni brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role, having worked in some of the most prestigious wineries in Tuscany before joining Poggio Antico. After harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted to remove any unwanted fruit or stems before pressing and fermentation in stainless steel or concrete vats. Indigenous yeasts are used. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes maceration, where the juice is kept in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, typically around 20-30 days. After fermentation and maceration, the wine is aged in oak barrels, typically Slavonian oak or French oak, for a period of 36 to 48 months, depending on the specific vintage. The wine undergoes both malolactic fermentation and elevage in oak, which contributes to its smoothness and aging potential.
