2017 Tenute Lunelli Castelbuono Montefalco Sagrantino Carapace
2017 Tenute Lunelli Castelbuono Montefalco Sagrantino Carapace
A grape variety that is absolutely unique in terms of power and longevity, the Sagrantino from Tenuta Castelbuono, is certified organic. It amazes one with its mellowness, which stems from the excellent viticultural methods and long ageing in large oak casks. Outstanding!
Tasting Notes
With intense ruby red colour, deep and impenetrable, tthis is an outstanding Sagrantino. The nose is full of blackberry jam and blueberries, cherries, carob, rose petals and wet earth, on a darker background of dark chocolate and liquorice. The palate is concentrated and very tactile. The wine has power and persuasiveness at the same time, a moving tannin and a fresh-savory balance that refines the whole. It is extremely dry with just 1.6 grams of residual sugar. It has a soft mouthfeel without lacking in juicy liveliness. The finish delights with a beautiful aftertaste. The balsamic persistence is infinite.
The Winemaker
The winemaker Luca D'Attoma. The Sagrantino grapes are grown on a single 30-year-old vineyard and the grapes are picked 3 times for optimum ripeness. Fermentation involves 3 different steps due to the passage of the separate masses respectively in stainless steel, wooden vats and terracotta amphorae. The three masses are then blended before the maturation in large wooden casks for at least 3 years plus bottle ageing.
About The Winery
In 2001, fascinated by the ancient and mystical land of Umbria and by the powerful Sagrantino wines, the Lunelli family acquired Tenuta Castelbuono. With this aspiring project, the Lunellis continue the tradition of excellence they have achieved with Ferrari sparkling wine. The winery is a realization of sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro and the technical expertise of architect Giorgio Pedrotti. The huge dome covered with copper, marked with a pattern of grooves and cracks, is inspired by a carapace, a tortoise shell. An accompanying sculptural element in the shape of a red arrow (called the Lampante) piercing the earth highlights the structure in the surrounding landscape.
